Why do people run Reno into the ground?

Hello, my question is, why do so many people run this City not a town, into the ground? why? what does Vegas have, that we dont? besides the fact that Vegas has 500,000 more people, which they do, but this isnt about population, this is about comparing amenaties, Reno has so much, and in my opinion, they have the same. To all those who say, Reno is '; smallish '; its NOT, we have 500,000 people living in this area, including Sparks and Stead. I promote Reno, I want people to come here, because of all we have around us, skiing, golfing, biking, kyaking, hiking, plus we have all the gaming you desire, how about Dolce from LA, coming soon, Charlie Palmer steakhouse and Fish inside the Grand Sierra Resort, If the celebritys see that Reno has that potential, why dont you. let me clerify, Reno is NOT Vegas, and the words say it all, Reno is NOT Vegas, and It wont be, Vegas is more for gaming, Reno is a city much like Sacramento or Denver only with Gaming, we have nightlife, try 210 N downtown, very stylish. Reno and Vegas are different citys, they cant be compared, But in my feeling Reno has everthing, Gaming, Dining, and Shopping wise that Vegas has, you just have to look around, Thank You.

Wow, Sacramento, what an awesome travel destination to be compared to! :%26gt;)

Why do people run Reno into the ground?

I moved to Reno from LA almost two years ago and in just that time I%26#39;ve seen Reno and it%26#39;s ';hipness'; factor grow. Reno is getting there.....with the addition of all the things you mentioned but the ';knocking'; of Reno is not about trying to live up to Vegas it%26#39;s about the people. True Reno folks just don%26#39;t get it. A fancy night out to them is going to the Olive Garden or the Red Loster. They would never spend a dime at any of those places you listed. Reno is only getting these hip places in order to attract high end clientele from the Bay Area, LA and national and international crowds. So when people knock Reno it%26#39;s not about it%26#39;s lack of amenities, it%26#39;s about the fact that the show Reno 911 is not too far off from the truth! It%26#39;s the influence of all the Californians moving to the city that has caused it to launch forward so fast. Most true Reno folk would tell you that they hate all the newness, the slick city type businesses and the folks that these things bring with them. I think most would prefer it to stay the same old Reno that gives it it%26#39;s reputation now.

I completely agree with you,Harrahs. I live in B.C. (Canada) and have been coming to Reno for years.I used to drive with my spouse (now he%26#39;s an X) so I come by bus as I%26#39;m afraid to fly. I get in unday night and leave Thurs morning. It is not nearly enough time to spend in Reno!! But I love it and the surrounding area that I still come .I can remember the very first time I arrived in town. I said '; I love this place'; and I still doThere is everything here you are correct. This is the only place I spend my holidays . The only problem is because I come by bus I can%26#39;t recall where the shopping centres are or how to get there. Maybe you could help. If Vancouver started their air flights again you would see way more Canadians back again, but I guess there isn%26#39;t enough money to send planes there? I don%26#39;t know. But you will see me again in Aug.(Have to get my yearly tattoo done over at Absolut Tattoos)P.S. Reno is not Vegas and thank God for that!!!!!...Brenda.

harrahs: I would not ';run Reno into the ground';, and have been going there for many years...However, you need to realize that Reno should clean up their town...I was there last week...Have you experienced the torn out section of the street from Fitz to Cal-Neva where you cannot even cross the street and last year the same from Legacy? Have you seen the plywood boarded up sections on the main street, with debris and garbage litter everywhere? Have you seen the old Flamingo fenced off, the homeless house boarded off with grafitti , the shut-down Old Vegas casino looking awful with grafitti, ?? I took the bus from downtown to the Atlantis and have never seen so many down and out people...and have never seen as many beggars asking for money...I can%26#39;t imagine Reno surviving with the Indian casinos, their high hotel rates, their tight slot payouts, their ridiculous buffet prices, low comps, etc...The only thing I can think positive is the Lake Tahoe ski area...I also noticed that the Sands is now owned by Terribles...can%26#39;t imagine that to be a positive thing...

Reno is a dump, the best thing about Reno is that it is close to Tahoe.

Thank you to those who agree with me, to Jungle, Yes, ive seen the run down parts of Reno, the Flamingo is being transformed into condos, thats why its fenced off, I dont look at the bad parts, I see the good, have you seen downtown Vegas? looks like crap, worse than Reno in my opinion, and to GoodBeer, I didnt say to respond to Reno as a Dump, its not AT ALL!! and thats why I posted this topic, for people to realize that its not a dump, so if you dont like it, GO TO VEGAS!!! Thanks.

PLEASE dont send him to vegas!!! reno is a great city only thing i dont like about it is the price of houses!

harrahs: Don%26#39;t want to get into a disagreement about Vegas versus Reno with you..there is no comparison, IMO, but Reno offers a quick, inexpensive getaway for me...There were only 30 people on the plane on my flight down..everyone got an ';A'; boarding pass..I think the plane seated 130 people, so they lost big bucks on that segment....the flight attendant said there were 130 people on the next segment from Reno to Vegas..that says volumes to me...I imagine the locals look at all the good things in Reno, but tourists tend to look at all the ugly things...The shuttle bus driver told me that the busses that used to come from California has almost dried up due to the Indian Casinos..(I was the only person on the shuttle from the airport and also back to the airport) I wondered how Reno could continue to survive with so few people there all week......I saw a down-and-out guy up on the top of the water statues in the Eldorado dipping change out of the water...When a security guard came, they struggled, rolled around on the floor, and the guy ran off, with the guard not even following him...scary situation...could happen anywhere,. I guess ..I think if the cost of going to Reno is about the same as going to Vegas, Reno will lose....And, NO, I think the Fremont Street Experience canopy in Vegas is one of the cleanest areas I have seen

I%26#39;ve been to Reno more times than I can remember and I%26#39;ve been to Vegas twice. What I remember about Vegas is that it was too big to walk comfortably (I have minor mobility problems), there were too many kids (unless I%26#39;m going somewhere like Disneyland, I like to get away from kids), and I didn%26#39;t win a thing.

Reno, on the other hand, feels like ';home';. I arrive at the airport and I know where I%26#39;m going and what I%26#39;m going to do. There%26#39;s a casino 15 minutes from where I live, and when people ask me why I still go to Reno, I tell them that it%26#39;s because it%26#39;s a holiday. As the previous poster said, it%26#39;s quick and inexpensive.

I%26#39;ve just received a card from the Eldorado for a promotion for two free nights, plus I%26#39;ve enough frequent flyer miles with Alaska for a free trip. Guess where I%26#39;m heading AGAIN??? And I can%26#39;t wait.
