Things to do around Vegas?

Hello All,

We will be traveling to vegas in November. What types of things are there to do outside the city? Any neat sites?

Thanks,

Matt

Things to do around Vegas?

I%26#39;ll address both of your questions on this post...you could drive to Mesquite which is a small town northeast of Vegas, and there are (I think) 5 casinos there and a couple really good golf courses. (so we%26#39;ve been told here on the forum)

The Valley of Fire is beautiful %26amp; a great place for hiking. It is about an hour away (I think). Also there is hoover dam %26amp; red rock park.

I really enjoy heading up to Mount Charleston both in winter and summer. In November if you travelled out there you%26#39;d probably see some snow on the peaks. It%26#39;s just a fascinating drive It%26#39;s about 40 or so minutes from the strip. First the landscape around you is desert, and then progressively more foliage appears until you feel like your in the Berkshires in New England (well. sort of close to that anyway). There are two lodges on the Mountain with restaurants in both, and pretty fantastic views.

Definitely go to Hoover Dam/Lake Mead/Valley of Fire. To me it a must do if you have never been there before. Lake Mead has a nice paddleboat cruise. VOF has spectacular scenery that will knock your socks off. You can drive from formation to formation but to really appreciate its beauty you can hike on some of the trails- some are very short. November would perfect weather to do this. You can also bring food and water (there are none in the park) and have a picnic in the picnic area. The visit could take a couple of hours and then y ou will have the rest of the time to enjoy other off strip attractions and hotels- Red Rock Station, GVR, etc. You can also enjoy restaurants that are off strip- Andre%26#39;s (downtown), Rosemary%26#39;s or Hugo%26#39;s Cellar.

Just be aware of the fact that in November part of Mt. Charleston becomes a ski resort. You might need 4 wheel drive to get up there. Check its website for weather conditions, snowstorms and warnings. It is usually about 30 degrees cooler than the strip.

Red Rock Canyon is also another choice. It is closer to the strip but is not nearly as fantastic as VOF. RRC does have some hiking trails but it also has a 13 mile loop you can drive on with pull off points so you can get out of the car. If you can only see one- I would definitely choose VOF.

Red Rock Canyon or for a full day out of LV, Zion National Park or the closest Grand Canyon rim.

There are also some horseback riding experinces if that is something you like. They can be kind of pricey but November is a good time to do that kind of thing if you are a mind to. The weather is right.

Not to dispute what VP03 is saying, but when I went up last January It was not too crowded, and we went up in our Yaris. But, it%26#39;s so spectacular, I imagine it could get incredibly packed. I did travel in the middle of the week though, so that may have something to do with the relative quiet.

Also VP03 reminded me. My restaurant suggestion if you are really off the strip, is Nora%26#39;s Wine Bar in summerlin. Vast wine selection. Inexpensive. Delicious.

I am not sure where you got the idea I said either Mt. Charleston or VOF are ever crowded. Just the opposite- I never found them to be crowded. I just wanted to warn someone that there are snowstorms on Mt. Charleston that might make it difficult to ascend. There have been ';chains only'; warnings . I agree with you - it is a great place to see different scenery. And it is a close place to go if someone wants to see snow- although not exactly a top rated resort. It can be oh soo refreshing in summer.

oh sorry about that vp03, I think I just interpreted ski resort as packed for some reason.
